1. We find that Sansarpur started representing college hockey as early as in 1920 . Which

Shows that even in those days Sansarpuris were going for higher education .

2. We also find that boys from Sansarpur, have played hockey for college teams of

Khalsa College (Amritsar), DAV College (Jalandhar), Lyallpur Khalsa College (Amrit-

sar). Beside some other colleges, the above named colleges have dominated sports

in general and hockey in particular. GNDU and PunjabUniversity teams mainly consist

of players from these colleges . This shows that due to Sansarpur vicinity to Jal-

andhar, which had college whose hockey standards were very high , also contributed

to Sansarpur hockey and also to the education of Sansarpur children .

The lists clearly shows that Sansarpur players were selected to play for University teams from Punjab University (Chandigarh) and GNDU (Amritsar). Both if these teams have been the strongest University hockey teams even for the pre-partition days still dominate University hockey .

We find that Sansarpur representation in Punjab University began as in 1946 , as Praior to this Sansarpur children were not able to get University education . Sansarpur representation in GNDU began in 1971 , the foundation year of the University .

Here also we find that Sansarpur representation in University hockey declined consid- erably in 80s and 90s as compared to 60s and 70s which were dominated by Sansarpur University players .

As has already been discussed that hockey was introduced to Sansarpurians by Britishers Army people . It is but natural that Sansarpuris were listed in British Army on the basis of their hockey skills . In fact British Army were the first employees of Sansarpur hockey players . It may also be noted that hockey standards of British Army teams was quite high and many of the players who played for these teams could have played for India too , as getting leave from Army duty in those days was very difficult, they missed the chance to represent the country .

A cursory glance at the table shows that the first player to be selected for the Army team was Ishwar Singh Kullar who represented 36 Sikh in 1912 . This shows that hockey has taken roots in Sansarpur in very beginning of 20th century .

We further find that some of the Sansarpuris rose to higher ranks in the military even at the time of Britishers. In those days , it was very difficult for any Indian to get rank in British Army, but Sansarpurians could do Sohal on the basis of their hockey skills. This clearly shows that Sansarpurians were selected in many Army teams in the time of Britishers , and the bend continued in Independent India too.

We find there from mid 30s Sansarpur dominated military hockey and their representa- tion in military teams is significantly high till 70s , however in 80s and 90s , there is nominal representation of Sansarpuris even in military teams, which shows after reaching its zenith in 50s and 60s, Sansarpur hockey began to decline in 70s and lost its glory in 80s and 90s .

This table lists the players from Sansarpur who represented various teams in All India tournaments of repute, such as Agha Khan , Beighton cup , Gold Cup (Bombay), Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup ( Bhopal ), Nehru hockey tournament , Scundia Cup etc.

The teams which have had players from Sansarpur are Punjab Police , BSF ( Jal.), Punjab Sports Club ( Calcutta ), JCT. ( Phagwara ), Rock Rovers ( Chandigarh ), P & T (Kapurthala), Rajasthan Club (Calcutta), Northern Railway, Punjab & Sind Bank, Poona eleven , Mohan Began , Bombay Police , Gujrat Police , Pepsu Police .

This list again clearly shows that Sansarpurians were selected in teams all over the country and have contributed a lot in strengthening their respective teams as these are the teams who have dominated various tournaments named above .

As most of these teams are departmental teams , we find that Sansarpur players were given jobs in various departments .

Here also the trend of representation of Sansarpur players in various teams confirmed to the set pattern . There is a peace of players from Sansarpur in 60s and mid to late 70s , where as the no. Declines in 80s and continues to do 80s in 90s.

Table 3 lists the players of Sansarpur who have represented different national teams in interstate tournaments at junior, school or Senior level. These are players from Sansarp- ur who have represented Punjab school and Punjab junior interstate tournaments and rest have played for their respective team’s in Rangaswamy cup .

Even a cursory at the lists of players, who represented Punjab schools reveals that the Sansarpur representation in this tournament began almost from the time of its commencement as Darshan Singh Kullar played in this tournament as early as in 1956. However , we find that there is very little or no representation of Sansarpur in this tournament since the beginning of 80s. Till the end of 70s, there is substantial represent- ation from Sansarpur , but only two players Balbir Singh Sohal and Balwant Singh Kullar played in 1988-89 and since then no player from Sansarpur has played in this tournament . It is clear pointed to the attitude of Sansarpur youngsters towards hockey during 80s and 90s .

Among the 10 players from Sansarpur who have played at National Junior level, we find that from 80-86 , there is no representation of Sansarpur in this tournament and there are 3 entries in the table during this period 1986-88 and again after a gap of seven years , we find the last entry in 1995. This collaborates the inference drawn above that in Sansarpur , roots of the hockey were weakened during this period.(80s and 90s)

In Rangaswamy cup, 77 Sansarpurians have represented 14 different teams . Some of them have played more than one team also .

There are 25 Sansarpurians who have played for Punjab , 10 for services , 15 for Indian Universities, 6 for Hyderabad, 5 for Patiala, 3 for Railways, 2 for Delhi , NWFP, West Bengal , Rajasthan and 1 each for Uttar Pradesh, Haryana , Jammu & Kashmir, Madras and Faridkot .

The figures given above clearly show that Sansarpur have not played for Punjab or neighbouring states only but were selected to for teams in al parts of the country, which clearly shows that Sansarpur hockey was not only recognised but duly appreciated in all parts of the country .

Here as given in the brief history of the the Rangaswamy cup will be in order.

We find the dominant teams of this prestigious tournaments are those , where have players from Sansarpur .

However , one finds that representation of players from Sansarpur has devindled since the beginning of 80s and even. Their home teams, Punjab, which was dominated by Sansarpurians in 70s , had only one Sansarpur players for them in 90s.

From table two, it may be seen that 14 Sansarpuris have represented their national teams in Internationals tournaments. The countries which have been represented by them are India , Canada , Kenya and England .

Out of these 14 International players, five represented India at senior level and one at junior level , where as three represented Canada at senior level and two at junior level , where as two represented Kenya and once England senior level.

Out of these 14, Darshan Singh Sethi, Pradeep Singh and Mohinder Pal Singh all others ( eleven in number ), belong to the same subcast “Kullar”. This further shows that Kullars have truly dominated Sansarpur’s hockey.

It may also be noticed that Darshan Singh Sethi was the Sansarpurian hockey International for India seniors in 1951and Parminder Singh Kullar was the last Sansarpuri-an to represent India seniors in 1982 . Thus , Sansarpur’s representation in Senior India team ended in 1982 , though Pardeep Singh represented India juniors in 1986 also , which again highlights the point that Sansarpur hockey lost its steam in late 70s and early 80s .

A closer look at the table further reveals that Sansarpur’s representation in Canada began in 1978 and in England in 1980. As in mid 70s ,hockey players for Sansarpur started migrating to these countries, thus Sansarpur loss became their gain. The process of migration of Sansarpur hockey players to other countries is still going on and thus we find that present Indian team has no representative from Sansarpur since 1982, but Canada was represented by Sansarpur as late as in 1998. Thus the migration of Sansarpur hockey players to the other countries emerges as one of the the major causes responsible for the decline of Sansarpur hockey.

As shown in table 1 , there are 12 players from Sansarpur who have represented their countries in Olympics. All of them are “Kullar”, a subcast of Jat Sikhs , and were resident of the same place . Out of these 11 Olympians, eight represented India three represented Kenya , as they have migrated to that country from Sansarpur .

Among the 11 players who represented India in Olympics , Udham Singh played four Olympics , a world record which he holds jointly with Claudius , Ajit Pal Singh in three, Balbir Singh ( unjab) and Jagjit Singh in two and Gurmit Singh , Balbir Singh ( Services ) and Tarsem Singh in one Olympic each .

Among the three players who represented Kenya , Hardev Singh played in three Olympics, Jagjit Singh in two and Harvinder Singh in one. It may be noted that Hardev Singh Jagjit Singh were real brothers and Harvinder Singh is son of Hardev Singh.

Though Sansarpur representation in Indian Olympic team began wayback in 1932 when Gurmit Singh represented the British India, but after Independence, Udham Singh was the first Sansarpuri to represent India in 1952 Olympics. From 1952 to 76, in seven Olympics , Indian Olympic teams had representation from Sansarpur. However, Sansarpur representation in Indian Olympic team reached its peak in 64 and 68 , when respectively four and five Sansarpuris were included in the team. After 68 , no seven Sansarpuris in Indian Olympic team declined , as there was a lone representation from Sansarpur in 72 and 76 team and no one from Sansarpur has represented India after 76 . Thus , the period of 52 to 76 can be called the golden era of Sansarpur hockey with its peak in mid 60s . It is a coincidence that golden era of Indian hockey coincides so well with it. As after independence, Indian hockey team continued won medals in Olympi- cs till 72, (though India won gold in 1980 Moscow Olympics but that was more by default as top hockey playing nations did nit participate there ) and since then Indian teams have been fighting for lower places in Olympics .
